Reports from Wayanad: 70% increase in tourists, hotels doubled in 5 years, is Wayanad facing huge losses due to this.

Such devastation happened in Wayanad area of Kerala, near Wayanad there is a village Mundakkai in which a man named Mohan Das lived, who told how on 30th July the whole village was destroyed due to heavy rains and the sound of clouds bursting was so loud that it felt like an earthquake had struck. When this man named Mohan came near the door and looked, a river was flowing in front of the door and the whole village was destroyed. This rain water was so strong that

along with Mundakkai it swept away Choorlamala and Noolpuzh of Malappuram district, 361 people died in this while about 206 people have gone missing and more than 9 thousand people are living in relief camps due to their houses being destroyed.

Experts are giving warning.

If we look at Mundakkai, Choorlamalla of Wayanad district and Malappuram district, the landslide has affected Nilambur forest area the most because the distance between Mundakkai and Nilambur is about 90 km and more than 30 dead bodies have been found here.

All these areas were declared eco-sensitive zones in the Madhav Gadgil report that came 13 years ago. This Wayanad is a hilly district that comes under the Western Ghats, which is the mountain range of Kerala.

Landslides occurred here.

It is known that Mananthavady, Mining, Hotel, Sulthan Bathery, Kalpetta landslides occurred.

Tourists in large numbers.

In the last few years, the maximum number of hotels have been established in Wayanad, one of the main reasons for this is that it is a tourist destination.

The maximum number of hotels have been established in Kalpetta and Sulthan Bathery of Wayanad.

Most of the mining takes place in the areas of Mananthavady and Sulthan Bathery and Mananthavady is also known for commercial activities due to its proximity to Calicut.

In August 2011, a panel headed by Madhav Gadgil submitted a report to the Centre. It was learnt that concerns were raised that the panel had pointed out environmentally harmful activities in Meppadi, while the governments of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are against this report. The Central Government had issued 5 draft notifications since March 2014, but the final notification was not issued. One of the reasons for this was that Karnataka argued that the implementation of the notification would affect the income of the people. Madhav Gadgil had also warned in 2019 that the Western Ghats have been badly damaged and if no action is taken, Kerala may have to face a major disaster in 4 to 5 years, but on the night of July 30, this warning given by Madhav Gadgil proved to be correct.

The story of Kerala.

On the night of 29-30 July, around 2 and 4:10 am, river water entered Mundakkai, Choorlamala, Attamala and Noolpuzha villages of Wayanad. Houses, bridges, roads and vehicles were all washed away.

This is how the accident happened.

Wayanad is an area of mud, stones and high and low dunes, the Mananthavady river flowing here originates from the 'Thondaramudi' peak, flooding in this caused a landslide.
