Will not be able to contest elections for eight years!
Where is it going that Rahul will not be able to contest elections for 2 years during the sentence and after that for 6 years under the Representation of the People Act. If this happens then in the general elections of 2024 and 2029, there may be a problem in front of the Congress. Now that the stay has been lifted from the court, Rahul will have a chance to contest the elections. Before the notification was issued, Rahul reached the Lok Sabha on Friday morning to take part in the proceedings of the Parliament and also attended the meeting of MPs.
Why is the court not stopping you?
Surat's Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Verma, after convicting Rahul, had stayed the sentence for the third day with bail granted for appeal. However, according to the Representation of the People Act, if there is a ban on conviction along with punishment, then their membership is saved from cancellation.
