Why should there be fasting in Navratri?
At the time of Chaitra Navratri, the cold ends and the heat starts increasing. When the weather changes, most people have problems related to Vata, Pitta and Kapha. If positive changes are made in food and lifestyle at the time of change of season, then seasonal diseases can be prevented. Devotees observing fast abstain from oil-spices and grains. Consume fruits, milk and fruit juices, which gives relief to the digestive system. The body gets the necessary energy from fruits. Due to fruits, immunity increases and our body gets ready to fight against seasonal diseases. Chanting mantras and meditating during Navratri helps in reducing negative thoughts. The mind becomes calm and concentration increases.
Why is Chaitra Navratri celebrated?
The beliefs of this festival are related to Goddess Durga and Mahishasura. Goddess Durga manifested herself in nine forms on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada to kill Mahishasura. All the gods had given different powers to the nine forms of the goddess. This process went on for nine whole days. Because of this belief, Chaitra Navratri is celebrated. After getting powers from all the gods, Goddess Durga fought with Mahishasura for nine days in the month of Ashwin. On the tenth day, the goddess killed Mahishasura. Since then the tradition of worshiping the goddess during the nine days of Navratri is going on.
